The Sierra de la Llorença is a small, narrow mountain range located between Cabo de la Nao and the tip of Moraira. It extends approximately five kilometers in a northeast-southwest direction and constitutes the geographical continuation of Cape de la Nao to the south, separating the Poble Nou de Benitatxell depression from the sea. Its maximum height is Puig Llorença (440 m), located at a horizontal distance from the sea of 1.5 km. From its summit you can see a dream landscape: the island of Ibiza, the islet of Benidorm, Cape San Antonio, La Nao, Ifach, Albir and almost the entire Marina region.
The rugged orography and proximity to the sea of Puig Llorença foster the existence of an important diversity of environments. Peaks, cliffs and caves, sunny and shady slopes, ravines embedded in the rock, old agricultural terraces, coves and cliffs…, all of them are home to a wide variety of species of interest.
On the sunny slopes, scrub composed of kermes oak, palmetto, rosemary or heather predominates, combined with espart trees. In shady areas, such as the bottoms of ravines, protection from the sun allows for greater humidity that favors the presence of mastic trees, wild olive trees or aladiernos trees, as well as carob and olive trees, a relict example of ancient dryland crops. These crops occupied the terraced slopes not so long ago, but the abandonment of agricultural activity favored their natural reforestation.
In these environments you can observe snakes, lizards and lizards sunning themselves on the rocks, as well as partridges and a wide variety of small birds; fauna that serves as food for birds of prey such as the short-toed eagle or the Bonelli’s eagle. It will also be possible to see the peregrine falcon hunting making incredible “stings”. As the sun sets, foxes, genets and wild boars take center stage, without forgetting the great eagle owl in search of rabbits and rodents.
The coast with sea cliffs and coves deserves special mention. (Penya-segats of the Navy)
