Jaume Llobell Oratory

The Jaume Llobell Oratory is a small chapel built in the late 19th century in El Poble Nou de Benitatxell. Its history is closely linked to the priest Jaume Llobell, who promoted the creation of a space conceived not only for worship, but also with an important social and charitable purpose.

This dual vocation makes the oratory a distinctive part of Benitatxell’s heritage: a small complex where architecture, religious devotion and solidarity form part of the same story.

The work of Jaume Llobell

The priest Jaime Llobell promoted the construction of the oratory with the aim of helping the most disadvantaged people in the local community.

From the outset, the complex was therefore associated both with religious devotion and with caring for the community. This charitable role allows the building to be understood as more than simply a chapel and connects it directly with Benitatxell’s social history.

The oratory thus preserves the memory of an initiative in which religious practice was accompanied by a clear commitment to helping those with fewer resources.

Simple and intimate architecture

The complex consists of a chapel adjoining several other rooms, maintaining a modest scale and an intimate character.

The interior features restrained architecture with Baroque and Neoclassical influences. The simplicity of the space and its proportions reinforce the sense of intimacy characteristic of a small chapel closely connected to the everyday life of the town.

Rather than monumentality, the architectural value of the oratory lies in the harmony of the complex and its integration into Benitatxell’s traditional architecture.

The porticoed courtyard

One of the most distinctive features of the Jaime Llobell Oratory is the porticoed courtyard preceding the chapel.

A succession of semicircular arches creates a transitional space between the exterior and the chapel. Its composition visually recalls the arcades of the traditional riuraus of the Marina Alta, buildings closely associated with the agricultural landscape and traditional raisin culture.

The courtyard is one of the building’s most recognisable features and gives the complex a distinctive architectural identity.

Damage and restoration

During the Spanish Civil War, the building suffered significant damage that affected both its preservation and the continuity of its use.

Decades later, in 1974, the oratory was restored and reopened for worship, recovering its religious function and ensuring the preservation of a place closely connected to local memory.

This intervention made it possible for the complex to survive to the present day while retaining much of the intimate and modest character that defines it.

A living heritage

The Jaime Llobell Oratory remains connected to the religious life of Benitatxell, maintaining a continuity of use that reinforces its heritage value.

Its significance, however, extends beyond its religious function. The building also preserves the memory of the social mission that inspired its creation, recalling an initiative intended to provide assistance to the most disadvantaged members of the community.
