Riu-Rau on the way down of Aviar, we start the route of the Aviar visiting a typical Riu-Rau of the area. The Riu-Raus are very characteristic rural buildings of the Marina Alta where the raisins are kept mainly to protect them for bad weather. We have before a thousand-year-old legacy, the moscatel dried grape.
The Riu-Raus are very simple rectangular buildings, closed on all fronts except for one facing the sun. The grape undergoes a previous scalding process, which accelerates its drying and makes the process shorter.
El escaldà, as it is known in the area, this process is a tradition dated from the Roman time and nowadays it is recognized as an asset of intangible cultural interest.
For almost two centuries, the Riu-Raus were the center of Marina Alta economy, generating wealth, a space of productive transformation where vineyard fruits ripened completely and the lifestyle of our ancestors formed a triangle, grape, escaldà, raisins. For all of these reasons, in 2014, el poble nou de Benitachell was included in the Marina Alta program for the promotion, dissemination and valuation of these typical buildings and their cultural wealth in the Ruta dels Riu-Raus project. But not only the raisins were dried in these Riu-Raus, but was not strange to find grandparents telling stories at night to the whole family, in where they overcame those hot summer nights better.
