Cantal de Gener Viewpoint

The Mirador del Cantal de Gener, located on Puig Llorença, offers one of the most impressive perspectives over the great cliffs of El Poble Nou de Benitatxell. From its elevated position, the view follows a succession of towering rock faces that descend abruptly to meet the waters of the Mediterranean.

Here, the defining feature is the verticality of the landscape: mountains and sea are separated by enormous walls of rock that shape one of the most spectacular stretches of the Marina Alta coastline.

A balcony over the cliffs

From the viewpoint, the extraordinary scale of the Benitatxell cliffs can be fully appreciated. The limestone walls, crossed by ravines, fractures and small cavities, form a vast natural façade overlooking the Mediterranean.

The absence of large flat areas between the mountains and the sea reveals the distinctive configuration of this coastline, where the terrain ends almost directly at the water’s edge.

The contrast between the pale rock, the Mediterranean vegetation covering the slopes and the intense blues of the sea creates a landscape that changes continuously with the light, sea conditions and weather.

Penya-segats de la Marina

The landscape visible from Cantal de Gener forms part of the Penya-segats de la Marina, one of the most ecologically and scenically valuable natural areas in the Marina Alta.

This extensive corridor of cliffs, stretching along the coastline of Xàbia, El Poble Nou de Benitatxell and Teulada-Moraira, is included in the Natura 2000 Network as both a Special Area of Conservation (SAC) and a Special Protection Area for Birds (SPA).

Its rocky walls support plant communities specially adapted to extreme conditions of wind, salinity and limited soil, while caves and less accessible areas provide refuge for a variety of wildlife.

A landscape that continues beneath the sea

The great cliffs visible from the viewpoint do not end at the surface of the Mediterranean. Beneath the water, the terrain continues in the form of submerged walls, rocky seabeds and sea caves, extending this extraordinary coastal landscape below sea level.

The protected marine area also contains valuable underwater ecosystems, including Posidonia oceanica seagrass meadows, which play a fundamental role in Mediterranean biodiversity and water quality.

This continuity between mountains, cliffs and the seabed reveals that the landscape visible from Cantal de Gener forms part of a much larger natural system.

The scale of the landscape

The Mirador del Cantal de Gener is an ideal place to stop and appreciate the true scale of the cliffs. From above, visitors can see how the Serra de la Llorença ends abruptly at the Mediterranean and how erosion has gradually shaped inlets, headlands and vertical rock faces along the coastline over thousands of years.

Unlike other viewpoints focused on a particular cove or geological formation, Cantal de Gener offers a perspective over the coastline as a continuous landscape of rock and sea.

How to get there

The viewpoint is accessed through the Olivos area of the Cumbre del Sol residential development, on Puig Llorença.

The Mirador del Cantal de Gener therefore offers one of the best perspectives from which to appreciate the true scale of the Penya-segats de la Marina: a vast rocky façade open to the Mediterranean and one of the defining features of the landscape of El Poble Nou de Benitatxell.
