Morro del Bou Viewpoint

The Mirador Morro del Bou, located on Puig Llorença, offers a spectacular perspective over the southern section of the great cliffs of El Poble Nou de Benitatxell. From this elevated position, the mountains descend abruptly towards the Mediterranean, creating a landscape of towering rock faces, ravines and small coves.

Its location overlooks one of the most rugged and best-preserved stretches of the Marina Alta coastline, where human presence becomes less apparent and rock and sea dominate the landscape.

Overlooking Morro del Bou

The viewpoint takes its name from Morro del Bou, one of the great rocky promontories that characterise this section of the coast.

Below, the terrain drops steeply towards the Mediterranean and extends towards Cala Llebeig. This area is also home to Punta de l’Alderà, which frames one end of the cove and forms part of the same dramatic cliff landscape.

From above, it is particularly easy to appreciate how ravines and fractures in the rock have gradually shaped the coastline, creating a succession of headlands, inlets and small coves.

An almost inaccessible coastline

One of the most striking features of the landscape visible from Morro del Bou is its rugged and secluded character. For centuries, reaching these corners of the coastline meant following narrow paths, descending ravines or approaching directly from the sea.

Despite these difficulties, fishermen and farmers found ways to make use of the land. Along the cliffs, old shelters, caves, agricultural terraces and dry-stone walls can still be found, preserving evidence of traditional ways of life associated with this coastline.

Nearby Cala Llebeig contains some of the finest examples of these structures, built into the rocky landscape just a few metres from the Mediterranean.

Penya-segats de la Marina

The entire landscape forms part of the Penya-segats de la Marina, a protected natural area included in the Natura 2000 Network as both a Special Area of Conservation (SAC) and a Special Protection Area for Birds (SPA).

The great limestone cliffs support habitats and species adapted to extreme conditions of wind, salinity and limited soil. Beneath the Mediterranean, the protected area continues with rocky seabeds, sea caves and valuable underwater ecosystems.

The limited accessibility of much of this stretch of coastline has also helped preserve its natural character and exceptional scenic value.

Between the cliffs and Cala Llebeig

The Mirador Morro del Bou provides an elevated perspective over the landscape that can be explored on foot along the Ruta dels Penya-segats – Moraig-Llebeig.

The trail follows the base of these great cliffs and allows visitors to discover traditional caves and shelters before reaching Cala Llebeig, offering a completely different perspective of the same landscape seen from above at the viewpoint.

How to get there

The Mirador Morro del Bou is accessed through the Palmeras area of the Cumbre del Sol residential development, on Puig Llorença.

The Mirador Morro del Bou therefore offers a privileged view over the southernmost section of the Benitatxell cliffs, a landscape where the mountains plunge directly towards the Mediterranean and where nature and history remain closely intertwined.
