Racó de l’Illot Viewpoint

The Mirador Racó de l’Illot, located on Puig Llorença, offers a privileged perspective over one of the most spectacular geological landscapes in El Poble Nou de Benitatxell. From its elevated position, the towering cliffs reveal traces of the tectonic and erosional processes that have shaped this stretch of coastline over millions of years.

A viewpoint over the Moraig Fault

At the foot of the viewpoint lies the Moraig Fault, also known as the Riu Blanc Fault, one of the municipality’s most remarkable geological features and designated a Natural Monument in 2022.

This major fracture, formed approximately 11 million years ago, reveals the displacement of enormous blocks of limestone. Its spectacular fault plane preserves polished surfaces and striations produced by friction between the rocks during tectonic movement.

Seen from above, the fault forms part of a much broader landscape of vertical rock faces, ravines and fractures that helps explain the complex geological evolution of the Benitatxell coastline.

The great cliffs of the Marina

From Racó de l’Illot, visitors can also see part of the Penya-segats de la Marina, the extensive protected natural area stretching along the coastline of Xàbia, El Poble Nou de Benitatxell and Teulada-Moraira.

Included in the Natura 2000 Network as both a Special Area of Conservation (SAC) and a Special Protection Area for Birds (SPA), these cliffs support habitats and species adapted to particularly demanding conditions shaped by exposed rock, wind, limited soil and the direct influence of the Mediterranean.

The towering limestone walls, cavities and ravines form a landscape of exceptional natural value that continues beneath the water, where sea caves and valuable underwater ecosystems are preserved.

A landscape written in stone

Racó de l’Illot offers a different perspective from Benitatxell’s other viewpoints. Here, in addition to enjoying the Mediterranean panorama, visitors can interpret the landscape through its geology.

The fractures in the rock, the vertical cliffs and the forms created by erosion reveal how the Earth’s internal forces and the continuous action of the sea have transformed this coastline over millions of years.

The Mirador Racó de l’Illot is therefore an excellent place to understand the relationship between geology, cliffs and the Mediterranean, three essential elements of the landscape of El Poble Nou de Benitatxell.

How to get there

The viewpoint is accessed through the Olivos area of the Cumbre del Sol residential development, on Puig Llorença.
